Participation in events for November 25th
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-Based Violence, we participate in events organised by institutions to prevent and address the phenomenon.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-based Violence, the Diotima Centre participates in a series of events organized by civil society organizations, institutions and initiatives from the field of art, academic institutions with a common reference point: the prevention and treatment of violence against women, a phenomenon that affects millions of women worldwide every year.

Below are the events in which the Diotima Centre participates in calendar order:

Femicide: experiences and proposals from the rights’ perspective | Discussion

On the topic of “Femicide, an extreme form of gender-based violence: experiences and proposals from the rights’ perspective”, the Hellenic Union for Human Rights opens a series of discussions-events on gender-based violence on Monday 22/11/21, 6:00 pm.

Observing the alarming increase of the phenomenon, special emphasis is given on the formulation of positions and proposals to address it. Maria Apostolaki, lawyer and Coordinator of the Legal Services of the Diotima Centre, will participate.

Femicide, the extreme form of gender-based violence | Discussion

Under the title “Femicide, the extreme form of gender-based violence” the Municipal Equality Committee of the Municipality of Halandri organises an online event on Tuesday, November 23rd, 7:00 p.m. on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Gender Violence.

Maria Apostolaki, lawyer and coordinator of the legal services of the Diotima Centre will participate, focusing on the need for legal recognition of the term femicide. (only in Greek)

Collective volume “Gender-based violence – Violence against women” | Book presentation

Alexandria Publications and the Gender Studies Laboratory of Panteion University present the collective volume “Gender Violence-Violence against Women” dedicated to the memory of the pioneer feminist Kaiti Paparriga-Kostavara, on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. at the Antonis Tritsis Amphitheatre, Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Athens (50, Akadimias Street).

The book will be introduced by Anna Vougiouka, social scientist – researcher of the Diotima Centre.

The Istanbul Convention | Online Workshop

The Gender Equality Committee (GEC) of the University of the Aegean organizes the webinar “The Istanbul Convention:

A discussion on the elimination of violence against women”. The event will be attended by Marina Farmakidi-Markou, lawyer of the Diotima Centre. A discussion will follow with the participation of GEC members of the Universities.

Discussion with the public

Red Jasper Cabaret Theatre organises an open discussion with the audience to inform and raise awareness on the gender-based violence that affects females of all ethnicities, ages, classes, and cultural backgrounds on a daily basis.

Eleni Houvarda, psychotherapist of the Diotima Centre, participates in the discussion. The event takes place at the theatre, 12 Kefallinias Street, at 22.00, immediately after the performance “Let’s go to our own country” (starting at 20:30), in which three women star, confessing their stories to each other.

No, it’s not your idea | Round Table

In the context of the 5th WIFT GR 50/50 Equality and in Cinema Festival, which is organized by WIFT GR, Women in Cinema and Television – Greece, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Film Festival, the round table “No, it’s not your idea!” will take place with the participation of Anna Michalakeli, program coordinator of Diotima Centre.

The round table will take place online on Friday November 26th, at 20:00, with free participation via the zoom platform.

Domestic violence | Round Table

The Hellenic Psychiatric Association organises the 8th Psychopharmacological Conference as a hybrid conference, on November 26-28th 2021, online and in physical space (Crowne Plaza Hotel-Athens) simultaneously.

Maria Liapi, sociologist-researcher, scientific director of the Diotima Centre on 27/11/21, 5:00 pm, participates in round table 7 on “Domestic Violence” with the presentation “Domestic violence: a form of gender violence or all that we insist on not (re)knowing”.

Voices against gender-based violence | Educational Workshop

Pilot interactive workshops on: “Voices against gender violence” for the students of the 3rd grade of High School with the instructor Virginia Xythali, are implemented by the Municipal Equality Committee of Kifissia in collaboration with the Municipal Education Committee and the Anaxagorio High School of Erythraia.

The workshops will take place in 2 phases (24 & 30.11) and aim to raise awareness on gender issues and gender equality and the understanding of basic concepts regarding harassment and gender violence.

Call it by its name: Femicide – Now what? | Online Lecture

As part of the “Now What?” series of online lectures by the Anthropological Research Laboratory (ARL) of the Department of Social Anthropology, the challenges that social anthropology faces – and social theory and research generally – in times of crisis such as the one we are experiencing, are discussed.

In the discussion “Call it by its name: Femicide” (1/12/21, 3-5 pm), Anna Vougiouka, advocacy manager of the Diotima Centre, and Maria Liapi, scientific manager of the Diotima Centre, sociologist-researcher participate and along with the other contributors, “seek to stay in touch with each other but also with the complexities and adversities of the social and political present, exploring possibilities of responding to them.”

Policies for the equal integration of women in the labour market | Discussion

A discussion on “Policies for the equal integration of women in the labour market” takes place on 6/12/21 at 3:15 pm at Serafio of the Municipality of Athens, in the framework of the homonymous three-day training seminar organised by Action Aid for the Internisa program.

The series of seminars is addressed to public sector employees in Greece, with the aim of highlighting the gender gap and the formulation and implementation of appropriate public policies to reinforce the presence of women in the labour market. Marina Farmakidi, lawyer of the Diotima Centre, will participate in the discussion, drawing on the centre’s long experience in the study and development of gender equality policies.

Supporting survivors of gender-based violence: What forms can exist? | Mediterranean Women’s Fund

At the Mediterranean Women’s Fund event, on 8/12, 6-8 pm, local time, two specialized organisations on gender-based violence issues share their experiences and knowledge with the audience. SOS Femmes en Detresse (Algeria) and the Diotima Centre (Greece) will hold an inspiring discussion between activists from Mediterranean countries.

Meriem Belalam, president of the Algerian organisation, explains how women’s shelters are managed in Algeria. On the other side of the Mediterranean, Elia Haridi and Michalis Mavrommatis, representing the Diotima Centre, talk about the various programs of the organisation aimed at supporting survivors of gender-based violence (legal and psychological support) addressed to refugee survivors of gender and sexual violence.

The discussion will be moderated by Sarah Sawydan and Noemiw Friedli from the Mediterranean Women’s Fund, with simultaneous translation into English and French.
